Abstract: 

Suburban passenger transportation holds a specific place in the work of the railway transport in Russia. This is due to its high socio-economic importance in society. The formation of agglomeration requires the creation of a modern transport system. The transport system is one of the most important elements of the socio-economic complex of any population cluster. Passenger transport determines the mobility of the population of the city and suburbs, creates a configuration and affects the geographical directions of growth of urban agglomerations. In this regard, it is very relevant and of scientific and practical interest to study the possibilities and ways to improve the efficiency of suburban passenger traffic. One of the solutions to the aforementioned issue may be to implement the project “City electric train” and to organize the movement of suburban trains on route III and IV at the Goncharovo – Irkutsk-Sortirovochny section. To analyze competitors and a possible strategy for transferring passenger traffic to railway transport, a comparative map of the characteristics of transportation communication according to transport types has been generated. The implementation of this “City electric train” event will allow solving the problem of delivering passengers to and from work from the settlements of Mamony, Maksimovshchina, Smolenshchina, reducing air emissions in the city, economic development of territories, increasing the mobility of the agglomeration population, the safety of transport services, and creating an attractive environment for developers and business, unloading roads (minimizing traffic jams), integrating intra-city routes into the railway network, stimulating the growth of passenger traffic. This project will help attract up to 800 thousand passengers a year.
