Аннотация: 

To develop the main growth areas of relay protection and automation devices, a structural and functional method is applied in this paper. For this purpose, the authors use the results of statistical analysis of data on the service life of the relay protection and automation devices for various types of element base. There is a tendency to increase the proportion of obsolete electromechanical and microelectronic relay protection, with the percentage of cases of incorrect operation due to aging reaching a quarter of the total number of incorrect operations. The main cause of incorrect operation is the fault of personnel units serving relay protection and automation. It had been revealed that the units of the relay protection and automation are not sufficiently supplemented with regulatory and technical literature. A tendency to lag has also been discovered while implementing the most modern microprocessor-based protection. The analysis of the available data points to the urgent need to both modernize relay protection and automation devices and define the actual directions of their development. It is also necessary to improve the quality of training of personnel of relay protection and automation units and services, improve the regulatory and technical base in the field of operation of these devices, and implement research results in the field of protection and automation systems in Russian electrical networks.
