Abstract:

Recently, the construction of railways and highways beyond the Arctic Circle in the zone of widespread permafrost has been developing rapidly in the Russian Federation. The railroad of non-public use Obskaya - Bovanenkovo was built. In the near future, it will be extended to the port of Sabetta. Within the framework of the investment project “Creating the Northern Latitudinal Railway”, it is planned to build the Obskaya – Salekhard – Nadym – Pangody – Novy Urengoy – Korotchaevo railway line in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (including the construction of a bridge across the Ob River in the Salekhard city area) with a total length of 707 km. The construction of railways in the areas of permafrost is one of the main scientific fields that has been developing since the construction of the Trans-Baikal and Far Eastern sections of the Trans-Siberian Railway and is being actively improved at the moment. This article discusses the issues of railways tracing in the conditions of permafrost. Permafrost is part of the permafrost zone, characterized by the absence of periodic thawing. Permafrost soils occupy large areas of Russia. Permafrost is directly related to climatic conditions on the planet, and recent global changes lead to an intensive increase in average temperature, which also affects permafrost. The effects of climate change affect new projects and the operation of existing railway infrastructure. The paper takes into account the impact of climate change on frozen rocks in terms of railway sustainability. The design of the railway in permafrost conditions can be carried out both with full preservation of permafrost soils and taking into account partial thawing. The article describes in detail the features of determining the location of the railway line in permafrost.
