Abstract: 

At present there are 3 main locomotive depots in the main direction of the Ulan-Bator Railway and adjacent sections (Darkhan, Ulaan-Baatar, Saynshand) and 5 turnaround depots (Sukhe-Baatar, Dzamyn-Ude, Erdenet, Zuunehharaa, Choyr).

Traction services in the main direction of the Ulan-Bator Railway and the adjacent sections are carried out in freight traffic (including export and transfer trains) by locomotives of the 2M62M, 2M62MM, M62UM, 2TE116, 2TE116UM, 2ZAGAL and DASH7 series, in passenger traffic – by diesel locomotives of 2M62M, 2M62MM series with the registration of the main locomotive depots.

Shunting work is carried out by locomotives of the TEM2, TEM18 and TEM18DM series. The freight traffic on the Tolgoit-Davaani stretch is being pushed (the leading slope is 16.6 %).

The Erensezav-Bayantumen section is serviced by diesel locomotives of the TEM2 series of the Bayantumen locomotive depot. In the long run, until 2020, traction services in the main direction of the Ulan-Bator Railway and adjacent areas, depending on the planned schedule and the tonnage rating of freight trains, are supposed to be carried out by locomotives of the 2TE116UM series with freight trains of 4500 tons, diesel locomotives 2TE166, 2ZAGAL trains weighing 3,000‑4,000 tons or less.

Due to the exclusion diesel locomotives of the 2M62M, 2M62MM series from the inventory for the period up to 2020, passenger traffic is proposed to be serviced by diesel locomotives of the TEP70BS series, as in the passenger traffic, the use of the main diesel locomotives of the 2TE116UM and 2TE116UD series is impractical due to a significant underutilization of its power and a lower design speed. Diesel locomotives of the TEM18 and TEM18DM series will operate in the shunting motion.
